First Week of 1st Grade

We've had a great first week of first grade!  Our class has 15 AWESOME students!  Here are some of the things we've been doing this week:

READING:
We've been busy learning how reading centers will work in our classroom.  We've played center games with beginning sounds and segmenting words.  We've also been doing read-to-self - reading lots of poems and paragraphs that we've written together.  We've spent time reading paragraphs that we've written together!  Here are some pictures of the kids reading with partners.

Next week, we will start our small groups with guided reading books.  The kids will be reading books at their own instructional level.  They'll also be working on a new phonics program online called READING EGGS.  In another group, they'll work with words - practicing spelling and writing words with spelling patterns.  I'm looking forward to seeing the growth they'll make.  First grade is such a fun year to watch kids grow in their reading skills!  Parents will be surprised how much these kids will be reading in just a few months!

MATH:
The kids have been counting collections of objects in our classroom.  Someone even discovered that we could group things and count them by ten much easier!  They've been working on solving problems their own way.  It's been fun to watch them solve multiplication and division problems in just the first week of school!

Social Studies:
We've read some great books about school rules and what would be respectful.  Our classroom has come up with some of our own rules:  1.) Be safe  2.) Be Respectful  3.) Try your best.  We've been working hard to try to follow those rules.  We've also talked a lot about our feelings and what we can do if we have feelings.

EXTRAS!
With back to school, comes Football Readers!  We were excited this week to welcome our first football reader into our classroom on Friday morning!  The kids listened to Rigo Johnson read a great book - they were great listeners!

I hope you enjoy our blog!  Feel free to leave us comments and be sure to check back to see what we've been up to!
